Immersion Heaters

Immersion Heaters consist of tubular or Mighty blade heating elements immersed into the fluid. Immersion heaters are very efficient and cost effectiv since all energy that is generated is dissipated directly into the medium which is being heated. Immersion Heaters are used to heat fluids such as water, oil, chemical solutions, electro-plating and salt solutions. Since some of these fluids can be quit aggressive, the sheath material needs to be carefully chosen. Other heaters used for heating fluids are circulation heaters, cartridge heaters, strip heaters, tubular heaters and flexible heaters.

We recommend the use of level controls and over-temperature sensors. (see pictures on the right)

Types of immersion heaters

  1. Screw- or pipe Plug Immersion Heaters
  2. Flanged Immersion Heaters
  3. Over the side immersion heaters
  4. Drum Heaters

Common watt densities for immersion heaters:

45 to 100 WSI: water
20 to 25 WSI: light oils, cooling fluids
10 to 15 WSI: medium viscosity oils
7 WSI: rude crude oil, vicious materials
5 WSI: very vicious materials

Screw- or pipe plug Immersion Heaters: (from 350W to 38,000W)

  1. 1", 1.5", 2" and 2.5" NPT pipe plug in brass, steel or stainless steel
  2. sheath material: copper, steel, stainless steel, Incoloy, Teflon (PTFE) coating available
  3. terminals can be NEMA 1, moisture resistant or explosion proof
  4. terminals can be with or without thermostat.

Flanged Immersion Heaters

Flanged Immersion Heaters, both round flange and square flange models are available for applications requiring larger wattages. Flanged heaters are made from tubular heaters or Mighty blade elements brazed or welded into a pipe flange. They are used in large capacity vessels, high pressure applications and are installed by bolting the unit to a matching flange welded to the vessel wall. The flanges are made out of carbon steel or stainless steel. They are rated for 150lbs, 300 lbs or 600 lbs.

  1. sheath material: copper, steel, stainless steel, Incoloy, Teflon (PTFE) coating available.
  2. electrical junction / terminal box can be NEMA or IP rated, moisture resistant or explosion proof.

Over the side immersion heaters

These industrial heaters are used in tanks where through-the-wall heaters cannot be installed, portability is required or where heaters must be removed without emptying the tank. They are suitable for freeze protection, or heating viscous materials (example: passivation tanks).
